BASIL BOWES COMPETITION TROPHY

Basil Bowes was one of the founding members of the club and a staunch supporter of competition within the club. He was also the clubs first Treasurer (1954-1962) and was Secretary from 1959 to 1962. He also generously provided clubrooms behind his garage as a meeting place. Sadly Basil passed away in 1964 however his widow, Belle, has allowed the club to continue meeting behind the garage. The club is grateful to both Basil and Belle.

The trophy was designed by club member David Caldwell and was originally awarded to a member for sporting achievement in an Alvis in designated club events. In the early days a replica was also presented to the member (the small ones in the picture where presented to W. (Bill) Barber)

The club stopped running sporting events in 1989 for a variety of reasons (the main one being insurance) and the trophy was not awarded for a number of years.

The future of the Trophy was debated several times as a number of members continued to use their cars in a sporting manner outside the club. In 2001 the committee decided to award the outstanding efforts of Mark Burns and this once again prompted discussion on the future of the Trophy. In 2003 a sub committee was formed of  three members active in various forms of competition at the time (Geoff Hood, Mark Burns & Dale Parsell) with a view to formalising the rules for awarding the trophy. The sub committee subsequently drafted the current rules which were accepted by the membership (See main Trophy Page.). The majority of the eligible events are Vintage Sports Car Club (Victoria) events.

Trophy is presented for performance competition in an Alvis. (Rules agreed to in 2002)
